Laboratory Activity 2D (Chemical Properties of Ethanoic Acid, CH3COOH):
Aim: To study the chemical properties of ethanoic acid, CH3COOH.
Problem statement: Can ethanoic acid, CH3COOH react with metal, metal oxide and metal carbonate?
Materials: 1 mol dm−3 of ethanoic acid, CH3COOH, magnesium ribbon, Mg, sodium carbonate powder, Na2CO3, copper(II) oxide powder, CuO and limewater.
Apparatus: Test tube rack, stopper with delivery tube, Bunsen burner, test tube holder, boiling tube, wooden splinter and glass rod.
Procedure: Using the apparatus and materials provided, plan an experiment to investigate the reaction of ethanoic acid, CH3COOH with metal, metal carbonate and metal oxide.
Results: Record all observations in one table.
Discussion:
1. Name the gases released when ethanoic acid, CH3COOH reacts with sodium carbonate, Na2CO3 and magnesium, Mg.
2. Name the salts produced when ethanoic acid, CH3COOH reacts with:
(a) Magnesium, Mg
(b) Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3
(c) Copper(II) oxide, CuO
3. Write the reaction equations between ethanoic acid and:
(a) Magnesium, Mg
(b) Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3
(c) Copper(II) oxide, CuO
Conclusion: State the conclusion of the experiment you have conducted.
Answer:
1. Hydrogen Gas
2. (a) Magnesium ethanoate
(b) Sodium ethanoate
(c) Copper(II) ethanoate
3. (a) $$ 2 \mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{COOH}+\mathrm{Mg} \rightarrow\left(\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{COO}\right)_2 \mathrm{Mg}+\mathrm{H}_2 $$
3. (b) $$ 2 \mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{COOH}+\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{CO}_3 \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{COONa}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}+\mathrm{CO}_2 $$
3. (c) $$ 2 \mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{COOH}+\mathrm{CuO} \rightarrow\left(\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{COO}\right)_2 \mathrm{Cu}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} $$
